As a counselor, I implement compassion and empathy to create a safe, comfortable space for clients to be themselves and work towards healing.
Heather Richards is a Licensed Professional Counselor with 20 years of experience working with diverse populations, from preschool-aged children to older adults. Heather’s background includes work with at-risk youth, family systems, and outpatient and group therapy. She is passionate about helping clients committed to healing and personal growth.
Heather earned her Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Capella University. She uses a client-centered, integrative approach that includes cognitive behavioral therapy, trauma-informed care, and strength-based techniques. She meets clients where they are while encouraging growth outside their comfort zone.
Heather helps clients feel empowered in their healing journey by fostering connection and trust. She values each client’s input and believes therapy should be tailored to individual needs and never one-size-fits-all. I am a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) with 14 years of experience in the mental health field. I specialize in working with individuals navigating substance use, anxiety, depression, and other mental health concerns. I have experience in both inpatient and outpatient settings and take a collaborative, client-centered approach to therapy.
I earned my Master of Social Work from Widener University. My approach is integrative and systemic, helping clients understand how life systems impact emotional well-being. I incorporate cognitive behavioral therapy to identify automatic and distorted thinking patterns and support meaningful change.
I understand how difficult it can be to ask for help, and I view that step as a sign of strength. I strive to create a warm, nonjudgmental space where you can show up as you are. Together, we can challenge negative self-talk, build insight, and help you move forward with clarity and confidence

My go-to approaches for helping people in individual therapy are person-centered and CBT. I find the best benefit in person-centered therapy because it creates a collaborative environment where clients feel empowered to work through anything they bring to therapy.
The tools I teach in individual therapy vary based on the needs of each client. Some examples of tools I may teach during individual therapy sessions include thought reframing techniques, mindfulness techniques, and understanding emotional literacy.
I know a client is making meaningful progress in individual therapy when they develop meaningful tools to tackle the problems brought up in sessions, and those problems become less impactful in my client's day-to-day lives.
Clients can supplement their time in individual therapy by implementing the tools learned in therapy outside of sessions, practicing meditation/breathing work, and practicing confidently addressing problems when they arise.
To prepare for your first individual therapy session, you can think about the things you want to improve in your life and how a therapist can best support you in that process.
Individual therapy, also known as Individual therapy, allows people to engage in private sessions with a skilled therapist, counselor, or psychologist. The core objective of individual therapy is to establish a secure and confidential setting where you can openly discuss whatever emotional, psychological, or behavioral challenges you face. Through these one-on-one sessions, the client and therapist work together to delve into, comprehend, and ultimately find solutions for the issues at hand in their life.
Individual therapy unfolds in a structured process, commencing with an initial assessment in which the therapist gathers essential information about your history, concerns, and objectives. Together, you and your therapist collaboratively establish specific, attainable goals for your sessions, which can encompass symptom alleviation, personal development, or finding solutions to particular challenges.
Yes, individual therapy, also known as Individual therapy, at Thriveworks can help you to improve your mental health and overall quality of life.
Individual therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and via Online therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.
The duration of your individual therapy sessions will vary. The decision on the number and frequency of sessions is typically collaboratively determined by the client and therapist.
