About
As a former school counselor, wife and mother of adult children, I bring both professional experience and real-life perspective to my work, creating a warm, compassionate and judgement -free space where clients feel understood, build their strengths, and find meaningful ways to navigate life's challenges.
Hello, I am Kelley Arrowood, a Resident in Counseling and National Certified Counselor based in Virginia. I hold a Master’s in Education in CACREP-accredited School Counseling from Liberty University and a Bachelor’s in Psychology with minors in Human Development and Women’s Studies from UNC Greensboro. For the last year and a half, I have served as a Resident in Counseling in outpatient settings; prior to that, I served seven years as lead school counselor in an elementary school. I work with children, adolescents, adults, and families navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, emotional regulation issues, grief, and family stress.
My therapeutic style is eclectic and person-centered. I draw from CBT, solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT), DBT, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), motivational interviewing (MI), exposure therapy, play therapy, trauma-focused, and strengths-based approaches. My approach is compassionate, warm, practical, with a healthy dose of humor.
Life can be difficult, and you don’t have to navigate it alone. I would feel privileged to hear your story and walk alongside you as you begin or continue your healing journey. Taking the first step can feel intimidating, but you deserve a space where you feel heard, supported, and understood. I invite you to schedule an initial appointment.

Parent-child interaction therapy (PCIT) is a specialized therapeutic approach that concentrates on strengthening the parent-child relationship and enhancing child behavior through structured, interactive sessions. This therapy emphasizes positive reinforcement and active listening to help parents develop nurturing and authoritative parenting skills.
In our parent-child interaction therapy sessions (PCIT), trained therapists at Thriveworks in Blacksburg, VA will guide you and your child in real-time interactions imparting effective communication and behavior management techniques. PCIT is commonly employed to address issues like disruptive behavior, defiance, and parent-child attachment problems, with the overarching aim of fortifying the parent-child bond, improving parenting skills, and fostering healthier child development.
Thriveworks therapists in Blacksburg, VA conducted parent-child interaction therapy (PCIT) both in person and virtual through online therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.
The length of parent-child interaction therapy (PCIT) is flexible and depends on the unique needs and progress of each family. Typically, PCIT involves around 12 to 20 weekly one-hour sessions, but the therapy length can be adapted based on the child’s and family’s response to treatment. While some families may complete PCIT in a few months, others may choose to continue for a more extended period to reach their therapeutic objectives.
PCIT is a family-oriented therapy that can enhance the parent-child relationship through improved interaction. It can help the parent learn techniques and bring about reductions in the child’s behavior issues. As a result, this therapy often leads to a stronger familial relationship.
If you’re looking for therapy to address concerns about your child or simply want to improve interactions with your child(ren), call or schedule online with Thriveworks in Blacksburg, VA.
In PCIT, you as the parent will have the opportunity to learn new skills that can help you become better able to provide a caring, nurturing, and beneficial environment for your child. An ultimate goal of this approach is to help negative behaviors evolve into more positive behavior patterns.
PCIT seeks to minimize any negative characteristics within the relationship, and teaches you, the parent, techniques for to use towards that goal. You’ll also be guided in developing new behaviors and communication skills to provide support and encouragement. Your therapist will introduce you to effective and safe disciplinary techniques that can then be used to help your child improve behavior by addressing and managing symptoms and issues that lead to the negative behavior. You’ll be encouraged to practice these techniques until you’re comfortable using them. Children who participate in PCIT can often learn how to adapt their own behavior, and many families experience vast improvement in child behavior and the parent-child relationship.
PCIT may be especially helpful for:
Children who participate in PCIT often develop greater self-esteem, experience less anger and frustration. Often their social, organizational and relationship skills are improved. Most feel safer and calmer, and communicate more effectively. As the parent, you typically can learn many consistent, reliable techniques for parenting. You may even experience greater confidence when dealing with behavioral concerns, whether publicly or in the home.
