Eating disorder therapy is a specialized approach aimed at assisting those who are grappling with a range of eating disorders. These disorders are significant mental health conditions characterized by irregular or unhealthy eating patterns and an intense focus on body weight and shape. Common conditions addressed in Eating disorders include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder, and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID).
At Thriveworks, Eating disorders begins with a thorough assessment and personalized treatment plan. Central to eating disorder therapy is psychotherapy, often employing cognitive behavioral therapy and other specialized techniques to target negative thought patterns.
The signs of an eating disorder can include:
CBT’s remission rate, according to some research, is generally between 50-30% for those seeking assistance for eating disorder symptoms.
The recovery rate for those seeking assistance with eating disorders depends entirely on the individual’s involvement in sessions, the severity of their symptoms, and their willingness to change their eating habits and relationship with food.
Eating disorder therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.
The length of Eating disorders will vary from one person to the next, dependent on their specific needs. Your therapist can help to determine what might be most beneficial for you.
Eating disorders are serious mental illnesses that can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, or background. They are often hidden due to shame and isolation but can have deadly consequences.
If you are struggling with an eating disorder, it’s crucial to seek help. Call Thriveworks Seattle at (206) 203-9770 to schedule a session with a provider who can address your needs.
Eating disorders include bulimia nervosa, anorexia nervosa, binge eating disorder, diabulimia, and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder. They are not just phases but are progressive and potentially deadly conditions. Early intervention can improve outcomes significantly.
The development of eating disorders can be attributed to a combination of environmental and biological factors:
Eating disorders are characterized by severe anxiety about body size and weight, unhealthy eating patterns, and often co-occurring psychological disorders such as depression or anxiety. The DSM-5 outlines specific diagnostics for recognizing various eating disorders, including bulimia nervosa and anorexia nervosa.
Anorexia Nervosa Diagnostics:
Health problems caused by anorexia may include abnormal heartbeat, infertility, risk of heart failure and disease, menstrual cycle disruptions, osteoporosis, kidney damage, low white blood cell counts, low heart rate, low blood pressure, endocrine disruptions, anemia, and death.
Bulimia Nervosa Diagnostics:
Health problems caused by bulimia may include ulcers, electrolyte imbalance, kidney damage, constipation, gastric rupture, gastroesophageal reflux disease, tooth decay, and heart failure.
If you are experiencing the effects of an eating disorder, Thriveworks Seattle is here to help. Call today to start your journey toward recovery at (206) 203-9770.
