I don’t believe the people who find their way to me arrive by happenstance. I believe there is purpose in our connection, and I consider it a privilege to be invited into your story.
I’m Tammy, a Licensed Professional Counselor with over 20 years of experience in the mental health field.I work with adults navigating anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, relationship challenges, life transitions, and those moments when life simply doesn’t look or feel the way they thought it would. I especially enjoy working with people who are ready to understand themselves more deeply, challenge old patterns, strengthen relationships, and create a life that feels authentic, meaningful, and fulfilling. You don’t have to have it all figured out. You just have to be willing to show up.
My approach is person-centered, compassionate, honest, and real. I don’t believe in "performance therapy" or "one-size-fits-all" treatment. We will laugh, reflect, challenge some uncomfortable truths, identify blind spots, and learn new ways of responding to life. I’ll meet you where you are while helping you move toward where you want to be.
Therapy is one of the few spaces in life where you get to show up and let it truly be about you. You don’t have to perform, have the right words, or pretend you’re okay. Come as you are. I’ll meet you there with compassion, curiosity, and honesty. If you’re ready to begin doing the work for yourself, I’d be honored to walk alongside you.

My go-to approach for treating depression is CBT. I enjoy using CBT because it has strong scientific evidence to support its effectiveness. However, I also tailor treatment to the needs of the client and incorporate supportive reflection and person-centered techniques into my work.
I teach the following tools in depression counseling:
I know when a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling when they report improvement in their depression symptoms (reduced symptom presentation).
Clients can supplement their time in depression counseling with coping skills, such as exercise, spending time outdoors, mindfulness, and building social relationships.
To prepare for your first depression counseling session, you can be aware of how often and how long you experience depressive symptoms, how depression appears for you, and how intense your depressive symptoms are. This will assist us in determining where and how to start treatment.
Depression counseling can help those with major depression, minor depression, postpartum depression, persistent depressive disorder, and more. The providers at Thriveworks in Chesapeake, VA will develop a unique treatment plan based on your specific experience, needs, and goals.
It is absolutely worth going to therapy for depression — depression counseling helps people better manage their symptoms and get back to living happier lives again.
Depression counseling works by helping people pinpoint life problems, distorted thought patterns, and other causes of their depression, then process and work through them in order to mitigate the negative effects those factors have on their lives.

Like all illness, depression has distinct traits, but it is also a unique, personal experience. The particulars of how it forms in individuals will be unique. People who have depression will have some good days, but they will mostly have bad days. It can be difficulty for loved ones to know that their family member, friend, or co-worker is experiencing depression. However, depression is an understandable illness, and it is also a treatable illness. Therapists and counselors can often help their clients manage their depression and have more and more good days.
The counselors at Thriveworks Chesapeake offer therapy for depression, and we have seen the difference treatment can make. We have worked with clients to find their diagnosis and a treatment plan that meets their needs. Our staff has walked with clients as they regain hope and happiness.
DThe Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) acknowledge several types of depression as mental illnesses. DSM-5 outlines the criteria for diagnosing Major Depressive Disorder, what most people call depression. Everyone experiences sadness, disappointment, and discouragement. These emotions will naturally rise and fall, but Major Depressive Disorder disrupts this ebb and flow so that people become stuck in the depression. Major Depressive Disorder is an illness that may necessitate medical intervention for treatment and, at times, for the safety of an individual.
The following symptoms are the DSM-5’s criteria for Major Depressive Disorder.
Only a doctor or mental health professional should make a diagnosis, but if you can answer yes to these questions, it may be time to reach out for help. Depression comes in a variety of forms. Of course, there is Major Depressive Disorder, but there is also Seasonal Affective Disorder, Adjustment Disorder, Postpartum Depression, Bipolar Disorder, and more. Working with a trained professional to find the right diagnosis is paramount to treatment. You may be fighting depression, but you do not have to fight alone. Many caring counselors and therapists are ready to help.
Depression is a ruthless disease, but there are effective treatments for it. Many people have worked closely with a therapist or counselor to find the treatment that works for them, and they have found hope and happiness again. You are not alone. Support and guidance are available.
Just as depression can take different forms, so can treatment. Mental health professionals can often help people find a unique and tailored treatment plan that meets their unique needs. Speaking generally, many treatment pans involve some form of psychotherapy and some form of medication.
