About
As someone who has lived and trained across cultures I understand how complex our stories can be. I offer a space to explore deeper patterns that shape our struggles, growth, and relationships.
I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with 15 years of experience, and I am also an advanced doctoral candidate in psychoanalysis. Over the years, I have worked with adults facing challenges such as anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, relationship struggles, and personality difficulties. Many of my clients come to me feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or weighed down by old patterns. I provide a safe and supportive space where you can reduce anxiety, sadness, or self-doubt, strengthen relationships, set healthy boundaries, and begin meaningful healing.
I hold a Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis and bring advanced doctoral training in psychoanalysis. My approach is depth-oriented and psychodynamic, with a focus on uncovering patterns, exploring meaning, and creating lasting change through insight, support, and compassionate care.
I invite you to take the courageous step toward therapy, whether you are seeking relief from pain, clarity in confusion, or stronger connections with yourself and others. Together, we can create space for growth, authenticity, and healing. I would be honored to walk alongside you as you take the next step toward a more fulfilling life.

As a queer clinician, my work centers authentic connection and safety while honoring how lived experience, identity, relationships and larger systems intersect in shaping each person’s story.
I'm Sarah, LCSW (she/her), with a background in anti-poverty, child welfare, and family systems work. Much of my professional experience includes supporting individuals and families navigating financial stress, caregiving roles, system involvement, and intergenerational challenges. I often work with young people and adults who are feeling overwhelmed, burned out, or disconnected while seeking stability, advocacy, and more sustainable paths forward for themselves and their families.
My approach is trauma-informed, relational, and systems-aware. I draw from family systems and strengths-based frameworks, centering safety, collaboration, and self- and community-care. I help clients reflect on patterns, navigate complex systems, and build practical tools rooted in their values and lived experience.
So many people arrive in therapy carrying stress shaped by systems, relationships, and responsibility. I work to create a space where you feel supported, understood, and encouraged to take the next step at your own pace.

As a Licensed Psychotherapist with 10+ years of clinical experience, I have been able to witness the impressive transformation folks are able to achieve through the therapeutic process and relationship.
I am Julie Lerner, a Licensed Psychotherapist with over 10 years of clinical experience offering in-person weekly sessions to adults ages 25–65. I specialize in working with folks navigating gender identity, sexuality, trauma, anxiety, and depression. I am especially passionate about supporting LGBTQ+ individuals and providing an affirming, inclusive, and culturally responsive therapeutic space. I have had the privilege of working with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and intersectional identities with a wide range of lived experiences, diagnoses, sexual orientations, and gender identities.
My work is grounded in Humanistic and Existential Theories and integrates Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, Solution-Focused Therapy, DBT, and CBT. I offer a collaborative, trauma-informed approach that is tailored to each person. Clients often describe my style as warm, grounded, and gently direct.
I aim to create a space where you can slow down, show up as you are, and feel supported in making sense of what feels difficult or unclear. Therapy with me is collaborative and steady, and I strive to meet you with care as we work through what brings you in. I would be honored to work with you if it feels like a good fit.
You deserve dedicated time with a mental health professional — it can be life-changing.

My go-to approach for treating anxiety is CBT. I prefer CBT because it helps identify and promote healthy ways to manage anxiety.
I teach:
I know a client is making meaningful progress in anxiety therapy when they start to return back to daily functioning.
I encourage clients to do the homework that is assigned in order to make progress in treatment.
To prepare for starting anxiety therapy, clients could try to prioritize issues/problems in their lives.
Anxiety therapy helps people better understand and manage their anxiety. Anxiety therapists at Thriveworks in Brookline, MA can develop a treatment plan that will help you better manage your day-to-day anxiety or your anxiety disorder.
Anxiety therapy involves talking to a therapist about symptoms, potential causes, and more. Thriveworks Brookline therapists will then work with you to determine where your anxiety might stem from and teach you effective coping mechanisms.
One of the best ways to deal with anxiety is to learn about your own anxiety: your symptoms, what triggers it, and what coping mechanisms have been effective in the past. When you learn what your anxiety is tied to, it can help you be mindful of what’s really happening as well as prevent and mitigate symptoms by processing and working through the issue in therapy. Other strategies that have been shown to help manage anxiety are meditation, challenging anxious thoughts, exercising, and journaling.
Common symptoms of anxiety include:
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can be incredibly effective in treating anxiety and anxiety disorders. Other effective techniques include exposure therapy, Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and EMDR therapy.
Anxiety therapy is conducted both in person and online, depending on the individual’s preferences and their therapist’s availability. We suggest choosing the option that best suits your needs.
On average, people can tend to attend 15 to 20 session of anxiety therapy (five or more months). However, this number is heavily dependent on the type of anxiety that’s being treated and its severity, with many choosing to attend anxiety therapy for a longer period of time to ensure its effectiveness long-term.
Yes, it is worth going to therapy for anxiety. If you are struggling with regular anxious thoughts and feelings that are affecting your day-to-day life or you suspect that you have an anxiety disorder, you should seek expert anxiety help.
All of the aforementioned concerns are out of your control. And while it’s normal to feel a little worried or concerned during times of uncertainty, sometimes this worry spirals and becomes a more serious problem: anxiety. If you commonly experience out of control worry about a range of events—such as when you’re applying for a new rental or attending a new workout class—you might be dealing with anxiety.

“Anxiety can look different depending on the person but typical hallmark symptoms of anxiety include physical symptoms (feeling panicky, racing heart, and difficulty breathing) and mental symptoms (difficulty concentrating, recurrent worries or perseverations, and disrupted sleep),” explains Corey Bisceglia-Kane, a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker at our Brookline office. Here is a more comprehensive list of anxiety symptoms:
“Therapy can be helpful in managing anxiety in that it gives you a place to talk about your worries which often helps you gain insights into where those worries began and if there is any validity to them,” says Bisceglia-Kane. “In therapy, you can also learn cognitive and behavioral strategies that you can use to reduce anxiety overall and to calm down when you are feeling acutely anxious.”
The most common form of anxiety is generalized anxiety, which detailed above. However, there are other types of anxiety, from social anxiety to panic disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. If you are experiencing anxiety related to more specific events or circumstances, you might have one of the following anxiety disorders:
If you think you might have one of the above anxiety disorders, be sure to speak with your healthcare provider or reach out to a qualified therapist.
