Obsessive-compulsive disorder therapy (OCDT) FAQs

What is OCD counseling?

OCD counseling is a specialized therapeutic approach aimed at supporting individuals coping with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The goal of this counseling is to help clients manage and alleviate the distressing symptoms of OCD by systematically addressing their obsessive thought patterns and compulsive behaviors.

How does OCD counseling work?

In OCD counseling, Thriveworks Asheville therapists use cognitive behavioral techniques, including exposure and response prevention, to assist you in addressing and managing your obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors. An OCD therapist will collaborate with you to identify and modify irrational thought patterns while gradually and gently exposing you to anxiety-triggering situations, helping to disrupt the cycle of obsessive-compulsive rituals and promote healthier coping strategies.

Is OCD counseling conducted in person or online?

Thriveworks OCD counseling in Asheville, NC is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does OCD counseling last?

The number of sessions for OCD counseling is variable, contingent upon the individual’s unique needs, the severity of their condition, and their progress during treatment. Typically, Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), commonly used for OCD, comprises around 12 to 16 weekly sessions, but the exact session count can be customized based on the individual’s response to treatment and therapeutic objectives. Some opt for a more extended duration to comprehensively manage symptoms and address complex issues.

It was a very good experience! My therapist made me feel very comfortable

Wendy Krull sees me as a whole person and hears me as the individual that I am and that alone is a good thing. We all need that. Being able to talk things out, the good things as well as my struggles, even how my day to day goes is so helpful. When my life got turned upside down last September 2025, I didn't know how to handle the emotional and physical stress I was dealing with, and nobody understood what I was going through. It became difficult to talk to my family, and I had additional stress from work. Wendy has helped me through it all. The highs the lows, the good days and the difficult days. Wendy is my safe person to talk to without judgement. We all need that for the healing process to begin.

Wendy Krull is my counselor and she is amazing. She's supportive, listens, and genuinely cares about people and it's reflected. I know I'm safe talking with her, regardless of what I'm talking about. She shares insights with me and has taught me techniques in how to relax my body and the positive effects it has on our overall health. The questions she asks me are so simple but yet they make me think and I have to look within myself for the answers and I've surprised myself on what was unlocked that I didn't even realize was still there. She helps me sort through my emotions and make sense of them. She's been a lifeline for me that I didn't know I needed. She's so easy to talk to and I can really share what's going on, past, present and my hopes and fears for the future. Wendy has been able to help me navigate through the health issues I've been dealt and how to overcome and not give up on myself. I've had crying meltdowns a few times and I just don't do that outside of my immediate family, and I'm OK if it happens because she's able to help me work though it when I'm at my lowest point. I've had highs and lows, and she's been with me every step of the way. There's been many times she's told me she was thinking about me during the week and was concerned. That in itself just makes you feel good knowing someone cares and is there to help. I am a better person to be around because I'm not holding all this emotional junk inside. I really look forward to our weekly sessions. Our lives are messy and we all need someone to help us navigate through it and I'm so thankful I have this wonderful lady to help me get through it.

I appreciate how my provider not only allows me to be myself but she also encourages it. She never makes me feel like I'm too much or too scattered. She helps me connect the dots on scattered days and helps me process on the harder and deeper sessions.
