About
I believe one of the most important things I can do as your therapist is to provide a safe and supportive environment that allows for trust and exploration.
Christopher Hawkins (AKA Topher) is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC). He has spent years honing his skills in different settings working with children, adolescents, adults, and their families struggling with the impact trauma, depression, anxiety, bipolar, and other mental health disorders can have on the individual, family, and their behaviors.
This experience, combined with the Master's Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling earned at Lesley University, has shown the importance of working collaboratively with the individual, family, and community resources to create a complete picture of the client’s needs. Using both evidence-based practices and expressive therapies, Christopher works with the client to strengthen the apparatus they may require for growth and change.
Christopher’s goal for every person and family that he works with is for both the individual and family dynamic to increase their ability to enhance communication, access coping skills, and gain a deeper understanding of self and their relationship to self and others to promote healing and become more self-reliant. If you are ready to begin this journey, schedule an appointment with him today.

I desire to create a space where you can show up exactly as you are—no story sanitation and no respectability performances—because real transformation begins with real acceptance.
I am a master’s level clinician with 19 years of experience supporting adults, adolescents, and families through life transitions, stress, anxiety, trauma, relationship concerns, and identity exploration. I create a warm and steady space where you can feel seen, understood, and supported as you work toward healing and lasting emotional growth.
I earned my master’s degree in community counseling from Regent University and have developed a clinical approach that blends cognitive behavioral, strength-based, mindfulness-based, and person-centered care. My work is collaborative and tailored to each person’s needs, pacing, and goals.
If you are ready to explore real healing and not just cope through the moment, I will walk with you at a pace that feels safe and empowering. You do not need to have everything figured out to begin. Reaching out is already a powerful step. Together, we can build the tools and insight you need to move forward with confidence.

Having experienced both the highs and the setbacks life brings, I’ve learned that resilience begins within. There is strength in being your own strongest supporter, holding yourself accountable, and choosing to move forward — even when circumstances are challenging.
I am a dedicated mental health clinician supporting individuals across a broad spectrum of conditions, including generalized anxiety, panic attacks, depression, trauma and PTSD, mood disorders, ADHD, emotional dysregulation, grief and loss, self-esteem struggles, family conflict, and major life transitions. I also work with individuals navigating stress related to school, work, relationships, and legal or systemic involvement. I offer a steady, compassionate presence while encouraging accountability, resilience, and growth—meeting each person where they are and supporting them at a pace that is realistic and sustainable.
My approach is grounded in person-centered care, clinical structure, and practical skill-building. I integrate CBT, strengths-based interventions, and trauma-informed care to help clients build insight, emotional regulation, and healthier coping strategies. I'm someone who listens deeply and helps you build real tools for life outside of sessions.
If you've been quietly carrying more than most people realize, I want you to know that I see that. You deserve a space where you don't have to perform or overexplain. Wherever you are—overwhelmed, numb, motivated, or hesitant—you are worthy of support. Change doesn't require fearlessness; it simply asks that you be willing.

Teen counseling helps young individuals better understand and manage the challenges that affect their mental health. Common challenges amongst teens include anxiety, depression, ADHD, and problematic relationships with food.
Teen counseling works by using multiple techniques, tailored to fit the teen’s unique needs — based on their age group, their challenges, and the severity of their challenges. It might involve cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, art therapy, and others for varying ages. In any case, Thriveworks teen therapists in Amherst have the expertise and experience to help young individuals at their level.
Signs that teens might need Teen counseling can be very subjective, as they are experiencing many changes and can have intense reactions to them. As parents, you know your child best and are best equipped to judge whether certain reactions are standard behaviors for your teen or whether they might be hinting at a larger problem. Even so, there are a few common signs and events that often point to a need for therapy, such as experiencing divorce or loss, grief, consistent low moods, teens distancing themselves and becoming isolated, losing interest in hobbies, excessive anger or irritability, substance use issues, and suicidal ideation, among others.
Teen counseling providers at Thriveworks in Amherst, MA offer both in person and online therapy by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.
The length of teen counseling depends on your teen’s needs as well as the goals that you and their therapist might have for them. Generally, teen counseling sessions will last for several months.
The teenage years can also be some of the hardest in our lives. Adolescents aged 12-17 are more likely to develop depression and anxiety than any other age group, and the suicide rate is abnormally large amongst teenagers. All of that on top of the everyday struggle of puberty, brain development, and finding someone to sit next to during lunch. Oh, and we can’t forget about figuring out what exactly you want to do for the rest of your life, being engaged in social and extracurricular activities, but still being a balanced human being.
Of course, teenagers come across as unhappy and stressed! And of course, you as a parent want to help them. It’s hard when adolescents see the world differently. Their brains are at a different developmental level than adults, so they have different priorities, emotional responses, and ways of problem solving. It’s a uniqueness that brings a whole lot of good into the world, but also can prevent them from getting the help they need.
Thriveworks Amherst Adolescent Therapy is working to change that. We have years of experience and training. It’s not your fault your teenager is struggling, and neither is it theirs. Adolescent Counseling is a great way to bridge the gap between teenager’s struggles and the healthy, happy life they deserve. You can schedule an appointment with a Thriveworks Amherst Therapist by calling 413-634-4805.
Two things are guaranteed to stay the same session to session in Thriveworks Amherst Adolescent Therapy: it is judgment free and client-first. Your teenager deserves to be heard and respected, especially in a counseling session that is meant to be about them in the first place.
Also, there’s no problem or struggle you could bring to an Adolescent Counseling session that is too big or too small for a Thriveworks Amherst counselor. We might reach out to other professionals, but we will always provide you with the best possible help we can give.
A few of the topics common in counseling for teenagers include:
We understand separating normal teenage moods from a true problem can be difficult. Thriveworks Amherst is here to educate you and your teenager, give you the best coping mechanisms, and be a supportive, safe space to overcome personal struggles.
That depends on what the main problem is, how your day is going, what your future goals are, your individual personality… every session is unique!
Some adolescents just need to talk things out, and traditional talk therapy works great. The combination of encouragement and problem solving is powerful. Others thrive in more advanced techniques such as:
Not everything in the teenager years is prom dances and football games. No matter how dire the situation may appear, there is always hope. Thriveworks Amherst is excited to meet and walk beside your adolescent as they heal and grow. So schedule an appointment with a Thriveworks Amherst therapist or counselor by calling 413-634-4805 and get your teen the help and support they need today. We offer evening and weekend sessions, and we accept most major insurances for our clients’ convenience.
