Thriveworks Psychiatry Overview and FAQ

Welcome to Thriveworks! This guide answers common questions about working with our psychiatric providers, from scheduling your first session to managing prescriptions and getting support between sessions.

*If at any time before your appointment you’re in crisis or at risk of harming yourself or someone else, call or text the National Suicide Crisis Lifeline at 988. If you’re in immediate danger, call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room.

OUR PROVIDERS

A nurse practitioner (NP) is a registered nurse with advanced graduate-level education (master’s or doctorate) that prepares them to diagnose and prescribe medication.

Every nurse practitioner at Thriveworks is a board-certified mental health nurse practitioner. They’re specifically trained to diagnose and treat mental health disorders.

Our nurse practitioners only prescribe medications for mental health conditions. They cannot refill prescriptions for non-psychiatric conditions.

Where required, our nurse practitioners practice under the supervision of a board-certified psychiatrist. In some states, a nurse practitioner is able to practice independently, just like a medical doctor.

Because our providers typically see clients back-to-back, it’s often difficult to connect by phone. The best way to address questions or concerns with your provider is to email them directly, schedule a session, or reach out to the Psychiatry team.

For non-emergent matters or time-sensitive medication concerns, reach out to our Psychiatry team: rx@thriveworks.com or (434) 300-3037.

If you have an emergent need, go to your local emergency room or call 911 right away.

A provider cannot prescribe new medications without having an appointment first, so if you’d like to change medications, please schedule a session by logging into your Thriveworks portal or contacting our support team at 1-855-4-THRIVE.

APPOINTMENTS AND SCHEDULING

Your initial consultation will be via video and will last about 45 to 60 minutes.

The session will include:

  • Review of the informed consent
  • Review of Thriveworks’ prescribing and referral policies
  • Discussion of your mental and physical health history
  • Review of your symptoms and presenting concerns
  • Discussion of treatment options

Payment is due at the time of the session via credit card only.

We encourage you to come with questions or concerns about medication so our providers can address them in depth and ensure you feel comfortable with telemedicine before filling a prescription.

It depends on your insurance if you have to pay a co-pay or have a deductible.  Unless your insurance plan covers a psychiatry session at 100 percent, most clients have a copay or coinsurance payment at the time of their visit. Keep in mind, this copay or coinsurance amount is only an estimate of the total you may owe based on insurance coverage.

If you have questions about what you may owe, contact your insurance company or reach out to our billing team at billing@thriveworks.com.

If you’ve been hospitalized in the last three months for psychiatric treatment, an evaluation will be necessary during your initial session to determine whether Thriveworks can provide the appropriate level of care for your needs. If you’re hospitalized at any point while receiving online care with a Thriveworks provider, you may need to be referred for in-person care to best meet your needs.

MEDICATIONS, PRESCRIPTIONS, AND REFILLS

Thriveworks psychiatric providers can prescribe medications for treatment of depression, anxiety, and other behavioral health concerns. This includes antidepressants (such as Wellbutrin, Lexapro, Zoloft, and Prozac), anti-anxiety medications (such as Prazosin and Vistaril), mood stabilizers (such as Lamictal, Depakote, and Topamax), and other non-controlled psychiatric medications.

Availability varies by state. In some states, we can prescribe certain controlled substance ADHD stimulant medications (such as Adderall, Concerta, Focalin, Vyvanse). Your provider will discuss what’s available during your initial session.

Thriveworks providers do not prescribe:

  • Substance use disorder treatment medications (such as Suboxone, Methadone, Disulfiram)
  • Weight loss medications (such as Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, Zepbound)
  • Injectable antipsychotic medications
  • Hypnotic sleep medications (such as Ambien, Lunesta, Sonata)

Note: ADHD stimulant medications are not available in certain states, including Arkansas, Ohio, Texas, and Georgia.

If you’re currently taking medications, Thriveworks cannot prescribe, or you’re looking for a medication that’s not available in your state, we’re happy to evaluate alternative medications that could be beneficial to you.

The initial visit is a consultation to evaluate appropriateness for psychiatric care and to discuss symptoms and concerns. It may not result in a prescription at this first session.

After evaluating your information and needs, our providers will prescribe a medication if they’re confident it will be effective and safe to treat your symptoms. The day a prescription is written, it will send to your pharmacy the same day.

To request a refill, first call your pharmacy. If you have any issues, contact the psychiatry team:

Please do not reach out to your provider about a refill. Some prescriptions, such as controlled substances, may require a new session before a refill prescription can be written.

Preferably as early as possible. Please allow at least seven days for a refill request. Same-day refill requests are not possible. If you are out of medication and in need of a refill, we may be able to schedule an appointment with your provider within 24 hours, depending on their availability.

We require ongoing care and regular follow-up sessions for safe, effective medication management, including refills.

If you missed your session, please call to make another appointment or book through the online portal. Our Psychiatry team is available to support refill requests in some situations.

You can let your provider know at your appointment that you want your medication transferred to a new pharmacy.

If you need to change a prescription that’s already been sent, you can make this transfer yourself. Call your pharmacy and request that it be transferred to the alternate pharmacy where you’d like to pick it up. (This can be dependent on the pharmacy.)

If you are experiencing side effects, schedule an appointment with your clinician for assessment or contact the Psychiatry Team at rx@thriveworks.com or 1-434-300-3037.

If your reactions appear to be severe, go to your local emergency room or call 911 right away.

ADDITIONAL COMMON QUESTIONS

For non-emergent needs, email or leave a voicemail, and your clinician will get back to you as soon as possible.

For non-emergent but time-sensitive matters, reach out to our medical assistant team at rx@thriveworks.com.

If you have an emergency, go to your local emergency room or call 911 immediately.

For medication questions outside of office hours, use one of the following resources:

  • Your pharmacist (for urgent questions about side effects or if you’ve left your medications somewhere)
  • Your primary care doctor
  • An urgent care clinic
  • Emergency services

We don’t have providers on call after hours or over the weekends. While your provider may work during these timeframes, our Psychiatry team members follow the hours listed on our website: https://thriveworks.com/contact-thriveworks/

Send all paperwork requests to rx@thriveworks.com or fax to (617) 864-0614.  Allow us at least seven business days for paperwork requests. Please don’t email your provider directly about paperwork.

Charges will apply for most paperwork, depending on the time it takes to complete and the complexity required to complete the documentation.

No paperwork will be completed at the first session, and it’s not guaranteed that your provider will complete your requested paperwork at all.

All sessions are via Zoom Pro. Thriveworks will provide a link to your Zoom session at least 24 hours before your appointment. The same link will be used for every session moving forward.

  • Click the Zoom link provided
  • Click “Launch Meeting”
  • Wait in the virtual waiting room until your provider is ready
  • Download “ZOOM Cloud Meetings” from the app store
  • Click the link in your email
  • Wait for your provider

That’s completely okay. We’re glad to have supported you in your care and are happy to help at any point again in your mental health journey. You can cancel your sessions anytime by calling our support team.

If you don’t have a session scheduled for 120 days since your last session, we’ll remove you from your provider’s patient list. But you can always call us anytime and easily resume care.

EMERGENCIES

If you’re having thoughts of harming yourself or someone else, or suicide:

Call 911 and/or get to the nearest emergency room. Call a family member or friend to help get you there.

We don’t have on-call providers, and our support team will immediately recommend the same: Get to the hospital as soon as possible so a medical professional can keep you safe and get you help.

*If at any time you’re in crisis or at risk of harming yourself or someone else, call or text the National Suicide Crisis Lifeline at 988. If you’re in immediate danger, call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room.
